Coconut Chutney

Coconut Chutney (नारियल की चटनी) is served with South Indian dishes like Idli, Dosa, Vadas, Uttapam and Paddu. This recipe is easy, quick to make and taste much better than the one you get in restaurants.

This is so simple recipe with the basic ingredients. I always use fresh coconut to make this chutney but if you don’t get fresh coconut then you can make it with frozen grated coconut. So let’s start and please follow step-by-step recipe to make simple mouth watering Coconut Chutney (नारियल की चटनी) at home:-

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup Grated Fresh or frozen Coconut/ नारियल
  • 2-3 Roughly Chopped Green Chilies
  • ½ tsp Gram Dal/Chana Dal
  • Small piece of Ginger
  • 2 Garlic Cloves (Optional)
  • ½ tsp Mustard Seeds
  • Pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 1 Red Chili Whole
  • 2 tsp Tamarind Pulp
  • 4-5 Curry Leaves
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as required

Instructions

  • Dry roast Chana Dal/Gram Dal in a pan until golden and aromatic. Transfer it to a bowl.
  • Heat 1 tbsp oil on medium flame in a pan, add mustard seeds, when mustard seeds start cracking add hing, curry leaves, whole red chili, ginger, garlic and fry them for 30 seconds.
  • Switch off the flame and let the tadka cool down.
  • Add Coconut, green chilli, roasted chana dal, tadka, tamarind pulp, salt to a blender or mixer jar
  • Blend all the ingredients well to make a smooth paste and add water as needed.
  • Transfer the Coconut chutney to a serving bowl and serve it with Idli, Dosa, Vada, Paddu or Uttapam.

Tips/Notes

  • Tadka can be added in the end to make it look more appealing
  • Cilantro can also be added to add more green color to the recipe
